Fly Tying Instructions for Beginners
If you are new to fly fishing and fly tying, it is best to start with some basic patterns in order to understand the basics of the equipment, and the processes involved. I went looking for some fly tying instructions for beginners and found this video from David Cammiss which takes you through the equipment you will need and the process involved in creating ‘The Buzzer’.
David suggests that to get started with this fly you need to get hold of the following equipment;
- A fly tying vice
- Sharp scissors with a sharp point
- A bobbin holder with a bobbin of black fly tying thread
- A reel of medium silver wire
- Fly tying varnish (clear)
- A long needle
- Your Hook
David is making his buzzer using black thread, which is the most popular color for buzzers, however you can use a range of colors for this particular fly.
David clearly has many years of fly tying experience and it is good to watch the steady and easy flow of his action as he builds up the shape of the fly to match that of a real insect. Even though there are not feathers in this particular fly, David is still working on making the fly look realistic and insect shaped, down to the suggestion that you add two small drops of orange paint to resemble eyes.
The Buzzer is a basic design, or pattern, of fly fishing fly. There are many other more exotic patters and the full range has been classified for many years. This can be seen by looking at some of the older books on the subject, like the 1895 book ‘the Salmon Fly‘ which first started to classify the fly fishing feathers and flies used to fish for salmon.
